When a hot water system dies or a storm lifts half a roof, people grab their phone and search. SEO for tradies is about making sure your business is the one they find and call: near the top of Google Maps, on the first page of results, with enough reviews and job photos that they trust you before you’ve met.
Fuelled SEO is run by Darren Franklin from Kurri Kurri in the Hunter Valley. We do tradie SEO for plumbers, electricians, builders and other trades in Newcastle, the Hunter, Maitland, the Central Coast and right across Australia. The work is done remotely, so it doesn’t matter where your ute is parked.
Why tradie SEO pays off
Most trade work is local, and a lot of it is urgent. Someone with water through the ceiling calls one of the first few businesses they see.
That makes search position worth more to a tradie than to almost any other kind of business. Two parts of the results page matter most:
- The Google Maps “map pack”. The three businesses shown with a map at the top of local searches. This is driven by your Google Business Profile, how close you are to the searcher, your reviews, and how well your website backs it all up.
- The organic results. The regular listings underneath, where well-built service pages and service-area pages compete.
Get both right and you can appear twice on the same search, which pushes competitors further down the screen.
What SEO for tradies involves
A Google Business Profile that’s set up properly
Your profile is often the first thing a customer sees. It needs the right primary category (Plumber, Electrician, Builder, Roofer and so on), sensible secondary categories, an accurate service area, real opening hours, a full list of services, and regular photos and updates. If you work from home, you can hide your address and show a service area instead.
Our Google Business Profile package covers this as a one-off job. If you’d rather understand what moves the map results first, our guide to Google Maps ranking factors explains it in plain terms.
A service page for each job you want more of
A single “Services” page that lists everything rarely ranks for anything. Google needs a clear page to match each search to. If you want more switchboard upgrades, bathroom renovations or colorbond fencing jobs, each one deserves its own page covering what the job involves, the problems that lead people to need it, photos of your work, common questions, and a clear way to call or book.
Suburb targeting done properly
Service-area pages can work well for trades, but only when they’re real. Fifty copies of the same page with the suburb name swapped out are what Google calls doorway pages, and they can drag the whole site down.
A good suburb page talks about the work you do in that area: the older homes with original wiring, the new estates with builder-grade fittings, the flood-prone streets, how quickly you can get there. Build pages for the areas you want work in, not every suburb within 100 km.
Job photos
Real photos from your own jobs show customers the standard of your work and give Google fresh, original content on your site and profile. Before-and-after shots and finished jobs work well. Name the files sensibly and add a short description. Stock photos do nothing for you.
Reviews
Reviews are one of the biggest factors in the map pack, and they’re what customers read before they call. Ask every happy customer, and make it easy with a direct review link in your invoice email or a QR code on the job sheet. Reply to every review, including the bad ones, calmly and briefly.
Don’t buy reviews or write your own. It breaks Google’s rules, and fake reviews can be misleading conduct under Australian Consumer Law.
Emergency and after-hours searches
Searches like “emergency electrician near me” or “24 hour plumber” are high-intent and high-value. If you offer after-hours work, say so clearly: a dedicated page, after-hours times on your profile, and a big click-to-call button on mobile. If you don’t offer it, don’t pretend. Customers who call at 2am and get voicemail leave the kind of reviews that hurt.
A fast site that works on a phone
Most trade searches happen on mobile, often in a hurry. Your number should be clickable and visible without scrolling, pages should load quickly, and your licence number, ABN and insurance details should be easy to find. Our technical SEO basics guide covers the site health side.
SEO for builders
Builders sit a little apart from the rest of the trades. Jobs are bigger, customers research for weeks before making contact, and trust and proof matter far more than speed.
SEO for builders leans on project galleries, a page for each build type you offer (custom homes, knockdown rebuilds, extensions, granny flats, renovations), and content that answers the questions people ask before they commit: how long it takes, how approvals work, what drives cost, what’s included. The search area is usually wider than a plumber’s, so suburb pages give way to regional pages.
Guides for specific trades
Every trade has its own search patterns. Start with the one that fits you:
- SEO for plumbers: emergency searches, blocked drains, hot water and gas fitting pages, and licence details.
- SEO for electricians in Newcastle: how sparkies can win more local work in the Hunter.
If your trade isn’t listed, the same principles apply, and our local SEO services page covers the wider approach for any business that serves a set area.
Common problems on tradie websites
- A one-page site with every service crammed into a few paragraphs.
- A template site from a directory or website provider where you don’t control the domain or can’t edit pages.
- The phone number shown as an image, or not clickable on mobile.
- Business name, address and phone number that differ between the website, the Google profile and online directories.
- No new reviews in the past year.
- Service areas listed as a long string of suburbs in the footer.
- No links from anywhere local, such as suppliers, trade associations or sporting clubs you sponsor.
How we work with tradies
We follow a five-step process: a technical and backlink audit, a competitor gap analysis, custom prospecting and manual blogger outreach, content creation and editorial placement, then indexation checks and monthly reporting. Links come from real, established websites through manual outreach. No private blog networks, ever.
Reports are written in plain English, showing the searches you appear for, how your profile is performing and what we did that month.
Expect measurable movement in three to six months and stronger results over six to twelve. Busy markets, like plumbers in a capital city, take longer. We don’t guarantee rankings, because no one controls Google, and anyone who promises page one by a date is guessing. Monthly packages have no lock-in contracts.
Tradie SEO packages and pricing
Our monthly SEO packages start at $1,500 a month (GST incl.) for Monthly Starter Linking, with Gaining Momentum at $1,799 and Full Revs Monthly at $2,100. Most tradies start with one of these plus the $850 Google Business Profile package. For a broader look at what SEO costs here, see our SEO pricing guide.

Tradie SEO FAQs
Do I need a website, or is a Google Business Profile enough?
A profile alone can bring in calls, but a website with proper service pages backs it up and helps you rank for far more searches. Most tradies who do well in the map pack also have a solid site.
How long does tradie SEO take to work?
Most businesses see measurable movement in three to six months, with stronger results over six to twelve. Competitive trades in big cities take longer.
Should I make a page for every suburb I work in?
No. Build pages for the areas you most want work in, and make each one useful and different. Thin copy-and-paste suburb pages can hurt your rankings.
Can you help if I work from home and don’t want my address shown?
Yes. Google lets service-area businesses hide their address and show the areas they cover instead. We set this up as part of the Google Business Profile package.
Do you lock tradies into contracts?
No. Our monthly SEO packages have no lock-in contracts.
