A burst pipe doesn’t wait for business hours, and neither do the people searching for help. SEO for plumbers is about being one of the first names they see when they type “emergency plumber” or “blocked drain” into Google, and giving them every reason to call you rather than the next listing.
Fuelled SEO is run by Darren Franklin from Kurri Kurri in the Hunter Valley. We work with plumbing businesses in Newcastle, the Hunter, Maitland, the Central Coast and across Australia, all remotely. This page sits within our wider guide to SEO for tradies, and focuses on what’s different about plumbing.
How people search for a plumber
Plumbing searches fall into two groups, and they need different handling.
- Urgent searches. “Emergency plumber near me”, “burst pipe”, “no hot water”, “toilet overflowing”. The customer wants someone now. They call fast, often from the map results, and rarely compare more than two or three businesses.
- Planned searches. “Hot water system replacement”, “bathroom renovation plumber”, “gas cooktop installation”, “rainwater tank plumbing”. The customer has more time, reads more, and compares prices and reviews.
Good plumber SEO covers both. The urgent searches bring in the call-outs; the planned searches bring in the bigger, better-margin jobs.
Winning the map pack
For urgent plumbing searches, the three Google Maps results at the top of the page take most of the calls. Getting into that group depends on your Google Business Profile, how close you are to the searcher, your reviews, and how well your website supports the profile.
For plumbers, that means:
- “Plumber” as the primary category, with relevant secondary categories such as gas fitter, drainage service or water heater installation service, where they apply.
- A service area that matches where you will travel, not every postcode in the state.
- Hours that reflect reality, including after-hours if you offer it.
- A services list that names the jobs you do.
- Regular photos from real jobs and short updates.
Our Google Business Profile package handles setup and optimisation as a one-off. The Google Maps ranking factors guide explains what moves these results.
Plumbing SEO service pages that rank
Each type of job needs its own page. A plumber with one “Our Services” page is competing with a single page against businesses that have ten. Pages that tend to matter most:
Blocked drains
One of the most searched plumbing jobs. Cover the causes (tree roots, wipes, grease, collapsed pipes), how you find the blockage (CCTV drain cameras, if you have them), how you clear it (jetting, electric eels) and when relining or replacement is the better fix. Photos and short videos from drain cameras are great original content.
Hot water
People search by symptom (“no hot water”, “hot water running out quickly”) and by product (“heat pump hot water”, “gas hot water replacement”, “electric storage”). A main hot water page plus pages for repairs and replacement usually works. Mention the brands you install and service, and any government rebates in general terms, pointing people to the official source because those schemes change.
Gas fitting
Gas work is licensed separately from general plumbing in many states, and customers know it. A gas fitting page should state that you’re licensed for gas work, and cover appliance installs, gas leak detection, bayonet points and compliance certificates.
Other pages worth having
Leak detection, burst pipes, toilet and tap repairs, backflow testing, bathroom and kitchen plumbing, and roofing or guttering if you do it. Commercial plumbing deserves its own page if you want strata, property manager or business work, because those buyers search differently from homeowners.
Emergency plumber pages
If you offer a 24-hour or after-hours service, give it a dedicated page that says so in the heading. Put your phone number at the top, make it tap-to-call on mobile, say which areas you cover after hours and roughly how quickly you can get there. Mention any call-out fee policy clearly; surprises on the invoice turn into one-star reviews.
If you don’t do after-hours work, leave it off. Ranking for “emergency plumber” when nobody answers the phone at night does more harm than good.
Licence details on your site
Plumbing is a licensed trade in every state and territory, and customers increasingly check. Show your plumbing licence number, and your gas fitting licence if you hold one, along with your ABN and insurance details. Put them in the footer and on your about page. Some states also require licence numbers in advertising, so check the rules with your state’s licensing body.
Clear licence details build trust with customers and send Google the kind of signals it looks for when judging whether a business is real and qualified.
The suburbs you serve
Plumbers often cover a wide area, but Google still favours businesses close to the searcher. Suburb pages help you reach beyond your immediate area, as long as each one is useful. Talk about the typical issues in that area: older homes with galvanised or clay pipes, tree-lined streets with root problems, new estates, hard water, septic systems on rural blocks. Mention how often you work there and your response times.
Skip pages for places you don’t want to drive to. A page that brings in a call from two hours away is wasted effort for both of you.
Reviews for plumbers
Reviews carry heavy weight in the map pack, and they matter more for plumbers than most trades because customers are letting a stranger into their home, often in a stressful moment. Ask after every job you’re happy with. A text message with a direct review link, sent the same day, works far better than asking a week later.
Reply to every review. For negative ones, keep it short, calm and factual, and offer to sort it out offline. Reviews that mention the job (“blocked sewer”, “new hot water system”) and the suburb help with relevance.
How we approach SEO for plumbers
We start with a technical and backlink audit of your site and profile, then look at which plumbers already rank in your area and why. From there we build or fix your service pages, set up suburb targeting where it makes sense, and earn links through manual outreach to real, established websites. No private blog networks. You get a plain-English report each month.
Expect measurable movement in three to six months, with stronger results over six to twelve. Metro markets are more competitive and take longer. We don’t guarantee rankings; no one can.

Plumber SEO FAQs
What’s the most important thing for plumber SEO?
For most plumbers, it’s a well-optimised Google Business Profile backed by steady reviews, because the map pack takes most urgent calls. Service pages on your website come a close second.
Should I have separate pages for blocked drains and hot water?
Yes. Each major job type should have its own page so Google can match it to the right searches. One general services page rarely ranks well for any of them.
Will SEO help me rank for “emergency plumber”?
It can, if you offer an emergency service and your profile, hours and website all say so clearly. Proximity to the searcher also plays a big part in these results.
Do I need to show my licence number on my website?
It’s good practice, and some states require licence numbers in advertising. Check your state’s licensing rules and show both plumbing and gas fitting licences if you hold them.
How much does plumbing SEO cost?
Our monthly packages range from $1,500 to $2,100 a month including GST, and the Google Business Profile package is $850 one-off. There’s no lock-in contract.
