Fuelled SEO is an international SEO agency for Australian businesses ready to win customers in New Zealand, the UK, the US and beyond. Ranking in another country is not a matter of switching on a new currency. Google needs clear signals about which version of your site belongs in which market, and each market has its own competitors, search habits and link landscape. We plan the structure, set it up correctly and build visibility country by country.
Fuelled SEO is run by Darren Franklin from Kurri Kurri in the Hunter Valley, near Newcastle NSW. All work is done remotely. If you’re still building your home market, start with our SEO services Australia page, because a strong Australian base makes expansion much easier.

ccTLD vs subfolder vs subdomain
The first decision is where each country’s content will live. There is no single right answer; it depends on budget, how different each market is, and how much authority your main domain already has.
Country-code domains (ccTLDs)
Examples: yourbrand.co.nz, yourbrand.co.uk. A local domain sends the strongest country signal and can build trust with local buyers. The downside is that each domain starts with little authority and needs its own links, hosting and maintenance. It suits businesses with a large budget per market or legal reasons to operate separately.
Subfolders
Examples: yourbrand.com.au/nz/, yourbrand.com/uk/. Each market sits inside one domain, so every link you earn helps all regions. It is usually the most cost-effective choice and the easiest to manage. The trade-off is a weaker local signal than a ccTLD, which hreflang and localised content help make up for.
Subdomains
Examples: nz.yourbrand.com. Subdomains can be useful when a regional site runs on different technology or is managed by a separate team. Search engines can treat them more like separate sites, so they often need more link building than subfolders.
For most Australian small and medium businesses expanding for the first time, we recommend subfolders on a domain that can serve every market. We’ll explain the options for your situation before anything is built.
Hreflang done properly
Hreflang tags tell Google which page to show to which language and region, for example en-AU for Australia, en-NZ for New Zealand, en-GB for the UK and en-US for the US. Without them, Google may show your Australian page to a UK searcher or treat near-identical English pages as duplicates.
Hreflang is easy to get wrong. Every page must reference itself and every alternate version, those references must be returned in both directions, codes must be valid, and the URLs must be the canonical, indexable versions. We implement hreflang in the page head, HTTP headers or XML sitemap, whichever suits your platform, and test it after launch. Our technical SEO services cover the wider checks that sit around it.
Expanding from Australia to NZ, the UK and the US
New Zealand
New Zealand is often the first step. Spelling and many search terms are close to Australian, so content can be adapted rather than rewritten. Even so, prices should be in NZD, shipping and returns details need to be local, and some products and services carry different names. Local NZ links help more than Australian ones.
United Kingdom
UK English is close to Australian English, but vocabulary differs. Australians search for “thongs” and “ute”; the UK uses “flip flops” and “pickup”. Prices need to be in GBP, with VAT shown as UK buyers expect, and the competitive landscape is usually much larger than at home.
United States
The US needs the most change. American spelling (optimize, color), USD pricing, imperial units, US date formats and different terms throughout. Competition is intense in most industries, so we focus on narrower keyword sets where you can realistically compete first.
Localised content, not copied content
Copying your Australian pages into a new folder and changing the currency rarely works. We research keywords separately for each country, adjust spelling, currency, units, phone formats and examples, and add local details such as delivery times, payment options and regulations. The aim is pages that read as if they were written for that market, because they were.
Local links in every market
Links from websites in the target country help Google connect your site with that market. Through our link building services, we run manual blogger outreach to real, established websites in each country you’re targeting. It is ethical, white-hat and 100% non-PBN. Premium guest posts can also be placed on relevant overseas sites.
Search Console per property
We set up Google Search Console so each market can be tracked on its own: a separate property for each ccTLD or subdomain, or a property per subfolder on a shared domain. That way you can see impressions, clicks, indexing and hreflang issues by country, and our monthly reports show which markets are growing.

International SEO FAQs
Do I need a separate website for each country?
Not usually. Subfolders on one domain are often the most cost-effective option, because every link you earn supports all your markets.
Is hreflang needed if every version is in English?
Yes. Hreflang tells Google which English version suits Australia, New Zealand, the UK or the US, so the right page shows in each country.
Should I redirect visitors by location automatically?
We advise against forced redirects, as they can stop Google crawling other versions. A suggestion banner that lets visitors choose their region is safer.
Will expanding overseas hurt my Australian rankings?
Not if it is set up properly. Correct hreflang and canonicals keep each version in its own market.
Which market should I target first?
It depends on demand and competition for your products or services. New Zealand is often the easiest first step for Australian businesses.
